Testimonials from schools, parents and students

Martin has a true love of chess. you can see it in his enthusiasm and energy. He sees the full potential of all his students and is truly dedicated to the improvement of their skills. He is a phenomenal teacher, not only the tailored instruction to each student, but, through his teachings, he imparts his knowledge of life skills.

One of Martin’s biggest achievement is to revitalize the scholastic chess program at the San Diego Chess Club. Through his active involvement and continuous support, the Jedi Knights Children’s Club has gained popularity and increased attendance for all levels of scholastic players, novice, intermediate and advanced alike.

Martin coached my son, Alex , for over a year prior to the World Youth (Boys Under 10). Alex finished 69th out of 200 participants. Alex also finished 2nd in the 2012 national K-12 Championship (3rd grade) and was USCF top rated nine year old for 2 months and has consistently been in the top 10 by age.

Martin’s talent goes far beyond being a National Master, as he has that rare talent of also being able to teach that which he is also a master at performing. Not only does he bring passion and a desire to work with kids, but his delivery to the kids is with such excitement and energy that it’s infectious.

In the chess club, Martin works with kids at a wide variety of skill levels from novice to advance. He is always punctual, attentive, patient, encouraging and fun. He is respectful to the kids during each lesson, and communicates well with parents and children. My kids always enjoy going to the chess club every week.

I am the father of James a National Master and FIDE Master. We would like to note that Mr. Nilsson was James’ coach for approximately five years. James won the December 2004 U.S. Chess Federation 1st place trophy in the 8th Grade class at the Orlando, FL, winter event.
